Opening Thoughts from the President & CEO The IRS recently released details of the success of the 2009 non-business energy (25c) tax credit, which offered a 30 percent tax credit to homeowners for the purchase and installation of energy-efficient products. This data proves that with the proper incentives, homeowners will purchase building products to reduce their energy bills. Even in a severely recessed economy, 2.3 million homeowners seized the tax credit opportunity to purchase and install energy-efficient windows and skylights throughout 2009. Bill Gorman Named AAMA Honorary Member after 26 Years of Service At the National Fall Conference in Palm Springs, CA, the AAMA Board of Directors unanimously approved a motion to award Bill Gorman, an engineer at Milgard who continued to represent his company with his active participation in AAMA and NFRC following his retirement in 2001, with Honorary Membership status with AAMA, as nominated by Ray Garries (JELD-WEN, Inc.). The deadline for submitting renewals is January 1, 2012, as the Corporate Membership year extends from January 1 through December 31. News from the Feeds In October, AAMA hosted its Southeast Region Fall Meeting in Miami, FL, where regional board members focused on advancing the performance of fenestration products and meeting the needs of local and regional codes. As we begin to approach the winter months, AAMA also focused on efforts to provide maintenance information. Not only can proper maintenance help to alleviate financial burdens with operating costs and heating bills, but additionally provide for longer service life and savings in operating costs. In other news related to energy, the release of the 2009 Tex Credit report brought to our attention the prevalence of energy-efficient products in terms of legislative efforts and resultantly, consumers. ![]() Glass Material Council Creates Task Group to Update Two Existing Documents At the AAMA National Fall Conference, held in Palm Desert, CA, the Glass Material Council met to discuss critical issues. A motion was made during the Council meeting to create a joint task group between AAMA, Insulating Glass Manufacturers Alliance (IGMA) and Glass Association of North America (GANA) in order to update CW-12 Structural Properties of Glass and GAG-1 Glass and Glazing. IGMA Discusses Emerging Technology and Innovation at Summer Technical Meeting During its Summer Technical Meeting held August 29 – August 1 in Victoria, BC, the Insulating Glass Manufacturers Alliance (IGMA) streamlined the organizational process forming a new committee, Emerging Technology and Innovation. GANA Energy Division to Launch at Fall Conference The Glass Association of North America (GANA) added an eighth division earlier this year as part of its Glass Week activities, but the first face-to-face meeting of the Energy Division took place in October at the GANA Fall Conference in Kansas City, which was held October 17 – 20. The first meeting featured a presentation titled "Air Leakage in Buildings: Mitigation and Code Issues" by Stanley Yee of Portland, OR-based The Facade Group. Aluminum Material Council Addresses AW and CW Class Products and Active Ballots At the AAMA National Fall Conference held in Palm Desert, CA, many of the Aluminum Material Council task groups and committees held meetings to address current and future projects and their goals moving forward. Various task groups also examined documents, reviewed ballot responses and discussed other Council activities in order to further their development process.
