NFPA Appeal Denial Offers Opportunity to Strengthen the Case for Smoke Vents The principal standard governing the use of smoke and heat vent products is National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 204-07, Standard for Smoke and Heat Venting. There are also allied standards, such as NFPA 92B, Standard for Smoke Management Systems in Malls, Atria and Large Spaces. Various code requirements are based on these standards, such as the International Building Code (IBC) and the International Fire Code (IFC). In terms of thoroughly addressing the use of smoke vents, the recently approved NFPA 204 2012 – arguably the most influential of the standards – remains essentially a draw. The optimum goal of getting a definitive guideline for the use of smoke vents written into the standard was not achieved; however, neither was the goal of opponents to have them eliminated entirely. Daylighting Gains Recognition in Codes Daylight harvesting is a relatively new term that encompasses a systematic approach to daylighting in which optimization of sunlight diffuses through a combination of sidelighting and toplighting. When combined with a sensor-based electric lighting control strategy (automated if possible), a desired task light level is maintained while minimizing ongoing energy costs. As a result of its strong energy savings potential, codes and standards have begun to address daylight harvesting—especially the latest editions of national model energy conservation and green building codes.
