The WCCMC Exterior Stain Task Group has been working on AAMA 633-11, Voluntary Specification, Performance Requirements and Test Procedures for Exterior Stain Finishes on Wood, Cellulosic Composites and Fiber Reinforced Thermoset Window and Door Components, which has been published and is available for purchase from the AAMA online Publication Store. The specification describes test procedures and performance requirements for exterior stain finishes applied to AAMA-certified wood, cellulosic composite and fiber reinforced thermoset components for windows, doors and similar products.
AAMA 633-11 is intended to assist the architect, owner and contractor to specify and obtain factory applied stain finishes, which will provide a good level of performance in terms of film integrity, exterior durability and general appearance over a period of many years. The terms “finish” and “coating” are used interchangeable in this specification and denote the layer of organic material applied to the surface of wood, cellulosic composite or fiber reinforced thermoset window and door components.
The chair of the FMC/WCCMC Exterior Stain Task Group, Wally Kesler (Valspar), noted that “this performance specification for exterior stain finishes on wood, cellulosic composites and fiber reinforced thermoset components aligns with our task group’s overreaching goal to develop performance specifications for exterior stained product performance with focus on system properties of adhesion and color performance.”
Kesler also stated, “The Exterior Stain Task Group recently made a related scope change to reflect our changing goals. As such, AAMA 633 provides continued work on additional specifications in order to further the exterior stain finishes market.”
The Voluntary Specification, Performance Requirements and Test Procedures for Exterior Stain Finishes on Wood, Cellulosic Composites and Fiber Reinforced Thermoset Window and Door Components is available to AAMA members at a cost of $10 for download, $20 for a paper copy and $25 for a CD. Non-members may purchase the document at a cost of $30 to download, $60 for a paper copy and $66 to receive a CD.
