October 28, 2011

At the AAMA National Fall Conference held in Palm Desert, CA, many of the Aluminum Material Council task groups and committees held meetings to address current and future projects and their goals moving forward. Various task groups also examined documents, reviewed ballot responses and discussed other Council activities in order to further their development process. Visit the Aluminum Material Council’s home page for more information.

AMC Marketing Committee
During the AMC Marketing Committee meeting, Chair Brent Slaton (Keymark) reported that the online training course needs to be expanded. In order to gain AIA accreditation, the course must meet an average of 60 minutes to complete. The group will be expanding the course by adding new content. If you would like to contribute information to these topics, contact Caitlin Cusack.

AMC Green and Sustainability Task Group
Slaton also reported that the AMC Green and Sustainability Task Group will not meet in Naples, FL, at the AAMA 75th Annual Conference, given that the current matrix for CW and AW class products has been forwarded to the Green and Sustainability Specification Development Task Group to resolve all further ballots; with any necessary revisions being reassigned to the AMC task group.

Code Update
In order to stay apprised of the legislative codes and regulations prevalent in the fenestration industry, Julie Ruth, AAMA’s Code Consultant, gave a report to the AMC Code Update Task Group. It was noted that code change proposals have to be suggested by January in order for work to be accomplished by the required deadline. The group has had numerous discussions on sun shades, and they will continue to revisit the issue. Nonetheless, it was established that there is not a need to develop any new task groups at this time.

Further conversation centered on what actions the Council is taking to promote aluminum in general. Several suggestions were made regarding reports given to the committee, which aim to focus on new innovations and trends in the marketplace, as well as inviting outside organizations to present useful and relevant information from the industry. One member offered to contact the Aluminum Extruders Council (AEC) to request an update at the Annual Conference or via conference call. A consensus was reached that providing additional education to AAMA members would have positive implications for everyone, and thus communication between the Committee and the AEC should ensue to promote this initiative.

Neil Chrisman (Spectrum Metal) gave a report on the AMC Finishes Committee as well as a report on the task groups that report to them in which he reviewed the AAMA 611 Task Group and the ballot was passed. The group also reviewed the Cool Coatings Task Group proceedings and it was noted that there are still comments to review, and that hopefully the document will be ready to be balloted to the Task Group in the summer session. Ben Mitchell also went over the Pre-treatment Task Group, which combined the Pre-treat and the Coastal Environment Group. Testing will continue for 3000 hours, and data from the current test results will be submitted to AAMA.
