Wall Interface Council Activities Update

November 29, 2011

AAMA’s Wall Interface Council met at the National Fall Conference to discuss industry issues, including several document updates. Visit the Wall Interface Council home page for more information.

AAMA 800 Ballot
The Council voted to send the suggested edits which clarify the purpose and classifications within AAMA 800, Voluntary Specifications and Test Methods for Sealants to ballot. The purpose of the specification is to provide a minimum level of quality for sealants used with fenestration products. The group also intends to revise the perimeter sealant section in the document, before this latest version is ready to be published.

Test Report Extension
Following the AAMA Summer Conference, a proposal was approved on June 8 by the Certification Policy Committee (CPC) to extend the 18-month retest cycle to three years. Some benefits of extending the test interval, according to the approved WIC plan, is that a longer time between testing may accommodate improved test methodologies and encourage more companies to participate in the AAMA Verified Components List.

Flashing Sealant Compatibility Test
The Flashing Sealant Compatibility Task Group, Chair Joe Pufahl (Adchem Corporation) gave an update on the preliminary work on the Flashing Sealant Compatibility Test that Mike Stout (Protecto Wrap) is currently performing. In terms of flashing, the test involves scoring the material, then pulling it back to see how much substrate comes back on the tape. A conference call will be held following Stout’s testing, in order to review the results.

Joe Pufahl specifically noted the mechanism of sealant and flashing and that the group is trying to determine if the Task Group needs to create a new standard or if they should revise AAMA 712, Voluntary Specification for Mechanically Attached Flexible Flashing.

Installation Documents
The Flashing Task Group [Chair Kim Flanary (Milgard)] will reopen AAMA 711, Voluntary Specification for Self Adhering Flashing Used for Installation of Exterior Wall Fenestration Products for ballot, targeting a completion date of October 2012.

The task group updating AAMA 2410, Standard Practice for Installation of Windows with an Exterior Flush Fin Over an Existing Window Frame will meet via conference call in order to ballot the document before AAMA’s 75th Annual Conference, February 26-29 in Naples, FL.

InstallationMasters Manual Update
The Council created a task group in order to review the InstallationMastersTM Training Manual and to update the document as a whole. Larry Livermore (Architectural Testing) will serve as the Chair, with Kim Flanary acting as the Vice Chair of the new task group.
