DOOR RELATED CHANGES TO 101/I.S.2/A440 2005 VERSUS 2008

The recent release of AAMA/WDMA/CSA 101/I.S. 2/A440-08 brings several changes affecting side-hinged door systems. First, is that the name of the standard has been revised to read “NAFS North American Fenestration Standard/Specification for windows, doors, and skylights.”

Changes related to performance requirements include:

1) Number of performance classifications (Clause 4.4.1) – Reduction from 5 to 4 by elimination of C and HC classes and addition of a new CW class

2) Performance grade caps (Clause 4.4.1) – Increased to 100 psf for R and LC class products

3) Force to latch requirement for side-hinged doors (Clause 5.3.1.2) – Standard of 65 N (15 lbf) maximum force eliminated and changed to test and record only. Also includes a clarification of the test procedure for both the lock and deadbolt

4) Operation/cycling for side hinged doors (Clause 5.3.6.10) – AW class, non-architectural terrace door test cycles changed from 1,000,000 to 500,000. Cycle rate of 12 to 24 cycles per minute identified for Class R products

5) Side-hinged exterior door glazing exception (Clause 6.2.3.4.6) – Must test heaviest glazing, or weighted equivalent that is to be qualified

6) Clarification of the meaning of and difference between design pressure (DP) and performance grade (PG)

7) Revision of the primary designators for design pressure (DP), performance grade (PG), and size tested

8) Prescriptive requirements identified (Clause 4.4.3.1) for the use of a Secondary Designator
