AAMA AIA-Approved Continuing Education Courses
Vinyl Windows: Designed for Performance online course includes information about durability, weatherability, energy efficiency/thermal performance, fire resistance, impact resistance, and more. For a classroom version of this course, visit our Continuing Education Partners page.
The following videos are taken from the AIA-accredited education course, Exterior Profiles of Windows, Doors and Skylights.
Impact strength (resistance to puncture) is measured by drop dart impact testing per ASTM D4226. A falling weight (dart) is dropped from a specified height and the puncture is measured to determine impact resistance. This test helps determine the ability of the profile to withstand fabrication processes, such as sawing, routing and punching. It also indicates resistance to general abuse during transportation, storage and installation. The test can also indicate how the product will perform in harsh cold conditions. This test is done in the extrusion factories at regular intervals through the day and night.
The Izod impact test is a destructive test that measures impact strength (resistance to cracking) by determining the resistance of a profile sample to the impact of a suddenly applied force. A notch is cut into a quarter inch bar and the force required to break the bar is measured. A minimum level must be met for a successful test.
This test helps insure the profile can withstand tearing forces it may encounter during fabrication, shipping and/or installation. For example, will the profile crack if the window is dropped during fabrication or installation?
